Psalm 57

I will cry out to God Most High, To God who performs all things for me.
He shall send from heaven and save me; He reproaches the one who would swallow me up. Selah
God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.
My soul is among lions; I lie among the sons of men Who are set on fire, Whose teeth are spears and arrows, And their tongue a sharp sword.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let Your glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah
My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
Awake, my glory! Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.
I will praise You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing to You among the nations.
For Your mercy reaches unto the heavens, And Your truth unto the clouds.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; Let Your glory be above all the earth.

Wind and Sea

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”
And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” – Mark 4:37-41

Even the wind and the sea obey him. don’t be afraid. don’t doubt. “Do you not care that we are perishing?” Have I not seen Him take care of me time after time, but I still doubt that he cares, I still doubt that he is going to take care of it? Such little faith in such a powerful God. Even the wind and the sea obey Him!

Trust Christ. Simple to say. Difficult to do. Peter sees Jesus walking out in the middle of the ocean and he forgets the waves, the wind; he only sees Jesus. He wants to go to Him. He walks out of the boat, onto water, yes water! He stands there for a minute but he starts to get distracted from Jesus; he starts to notice the storm, and he starts to sink. That’s what I do everyday. I see Jesus overcome all my crap all the time: my financial woes, my hurts and pains, my doubts and fears; he has always taken care of them for me, but everyday I wake up thinking I’m going to drown, thinking that this will be the time that Jesus lets me down. It’s been a lucky streak. Things have worked out well for a time, but there is no reason to believe that will keep going. How ridiculous it sounds, but how true of my heart. Those are my thoughts, that is my struggle: Trust Christ. thankfully he holds out His hand and saves Peter in spite of Peter’s doubt. He doesn’t just leave him there to drown in his lack of faith. He pulls him up and says “why did you doubt?” He saves me from drowning everyday, why do i doubt? Trust Christ. Simple to say. Difficult to do.

Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” – From Matt 23

Rabbi, Father, and Teacher

“But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Matt 23:8-12

Its hard not to want to be looked at as a great teacher and someone with all the answers, but if we are really going to be what we are called to be as followers of Jesus Christ we must be willing to be the least, be humbled and exalt our great teacher, Christ, and Father, God. We must see each other as equal brothers (and sisters) all under the same teacher and rabbi, all children of one Father.

Love: According to Jesus – and forgiveness

Speaking to Simon the Pharisee recorded in Luke 7:

“There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”
Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”
Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
